St Peter’s Square is getting a new hotel with 300 rooms

One of the last elements of St Peter’s Square’s regeneration has been given the green light, adding another tower to the Manchester skyline.

The derelict Peterloo House, immediately behind the One St Peter’s Square office block, will be turned into a 20-storey hotel.

Three St Peter’s Square, as it’s being rebranded, will contain more than 300 hotel rooms up to the eighth floor – and a 262-bed apart-hotel above that.

Councillors signed off the proposals at Manchester’s latest planning meeting.

The demolition of the 1970s Peterloo House, which has been empty for a number of years, will mark one of the last pieces of the square’s regeneration jigsaw.

Council chiefs drew up ambitious plans to redesign the plaza more than five years ago as part of wider proposals for a revived ‘civic quarter’ around the town hall.

Numbers One and Two St Peters Square – both office blocks – are already in place, along with new tramlines, a relocated cenotaph and upgraded paving and seating, as well as the refurbished Central Library.

Just around the corner on Oxford Street the old Odeon building is also being demolished to make way for a new office block.

Motel One’s new development will add an apart-hotel into the area’s mix, further expanding the chain’s existing Manchester presence on Cross Street and Piccadilly.

The main hotel entrance would be on Dickinson Street, facing St Peter’s Square, with the entrance to the apart-hotel at the corner of Dickinson Street and George Street.

No car parking is proposed.

The apart-hotel would comprise studio, one and two bedroom apartments in an L-shaped block. Construction is expected to last just under three years, with 170 jobs created. The development was one of several major city centre proposals to be signed off at the same planning meeting, as construction continues to boom.

London Road Fire Station’s dramatic transformation was also approved, due to create new shops, bars, offices, flats and arts space.

The same developer, Allied London, also received permission for a cluster of skyscrapers on the old Granada Studios site off Quay Street, to be known as Trinity Island.

And plans for a 40 storey-high glass skyscraper of apartments on the former Bauer Millett showroom site on Albion Street, around the corner from Beetham Tower, were given the go-ahead.
