Bee in the city - A unique art exhibition puts the spotlight on Manchester

From July 23rd to September 23rd, Manchester is hosting one of its most spectacular public art events showcasing the city’s exceptional creative talent and highlighting Manchester’s zeal for innovation and artistic expression.

The initiative is brought together by Manchester City Council and Wild in Art where a colony of decorative, super sized honey bee sculptures will be winging their way to Manchester this summer, bringing you nine of weeks of fun, fascination and adventure.

The Bee in the city world-class sculpture trail is inspired by Manchester’s iconic worker bee emblem that has been part of the city’s legacy for over 150 years depicting Mancunians’ energy, hard work ethic and sense of community.

The free family-fun trail will include over 100 individually and uniquely designed giant bees, celebrating the unique buzz of Manchester, from its industrial heritage to its vibrant music scene.

In addition, over 130 equally artistic mini bees are designed by Manchester’s school children and created as part of the Bee in the City Learning Programme which are now on display in venues across the city.

The inclusive Bee in the City Learning Programme, imaginatively linked to the curriculum, will give children and young people the chance to explore everything Manchester through creative eyes.

Local community groups are also invited to make their own special contribution to the inspirational learning project by working with artists to develop and realise their own unique and artistic ideas.

The exclusive Bee in the City initiative is aimed at creating a buzz whilst giving Mancunians and visitors an opportunity to rediscover and enjoy the city, taking in Manchester’s landmarks and undiscovered cultural gems.

Speaking on the initiative, Matthew Jay, Managing Partner of Alliance Investments, Manchester’s leading property developer said “Bee in the City exhibition highlights Manchester’s pioneering and creatively illustrious spirit, giving Mancunians an opportunity to soak in the city’s incredible architectural, industrial and cultural heritage.”

The public art initiative also encourages Mancunians and visitors to be a trail explorer and follow the art trail across the city by downloading the Bee in the City App.

Along with a trail map, the app allows you to collect big and mini bees while unlocking exciting rewards along the way. You can stay fit, track your distance, add photos to the Bee gallery and even see yourself on the big screen where selfies will be broadcast across the city of Manchester.
